I explore the paradoxical nature of light to address questions raised by quantum physics. I use "beam splitters"—traditionally used to determine if light is a particle or a wave—to create kinetic artworks in a state of constant flux.
They transcend binaries to reveal that reality that is fundamentally interconnected. The boundary between the observer and the observed dissolves; two people looking at the work simultaneously will see entirely different… things, each equally true.
At first glance, the piece presents a field of concentric lines reminiscent of the rings of an ancient tree.
Clear resin cones protrude from the surface, morphing the lines as the viewer moves. Depending on the viewing angle, the interiors of the cones reveal prismatic flashes of colour—the "Inner Light"—mimicking a quantum effect where light breaks into its hidden spectrum.
Peta Jacobs is a visual artist with a background in textiles, whose art unfolds through innovative mixed-media and kinetic installations and artworks. Her technique combines abstract geometric forms and post-digital optics, using optical materials from scientific experiments to create works that shift and reconfigure as the viewer moves. She infuses her art with metaphysical investigations into duality, interconnectedness, and uncertainty, inviting viewers into playful yet profound encounters that evoke a sense of wonder at the intrinsic wholeness of reality.
