Inspired by fashion and club advertising—specifically that of the legendary nightclub "Pacha"—the work transforms familiar visual motifs into an abstract composition. By overpainting and digitally manipulating an original advertising image, the work deconstructs themes such as branding, marketing, and consumer culture, combining analog and digital techniques. Thick layers of oil paint, acrylic media, fabrics, and pigments are applied to pigment prints…

« In my work, I deal with pictures that already exist and liberate them from their originally intended narration and function. »
Starting from the symbols of our society - an increasingly psychologically scrutinized communication through text and images - Peter Vahlefeld breaks up the context of such familiar obviousness with artistic means and incorporates it into his painting. Some motifs mutate into completely abstract color spaces, while other pictures still reveal objective details such as typography or figurative elements. In his overpaintings he thus stages a dialectical relationship between the visible and the hidden and thus a beautiful game of hiding and revealing. His examination is focused on the expressive gesture of the medium, the process of painting and the exhaustion of a formal and content-related motif. His painting is painting about painting.
