About this artwork
Acrylic, acrylic based medium, archival varnish UV protection, oil, fabrics, and pigmented Ultrachrome inkjet prints (collage) on canvas
Creating a composition by mixing pigmented inkjet prints of an overpainted museum poster, with paint and fabrics on canvas, the work highlights the juxtaposition of color, form, and texture. Parts of the image, words, text, and logos pop up as subject matter, instigating a situation whereby painterly gesture is… put into immediate relation with the original media flow, advertising »The Hermitage at the Prado, Madrid«.

Germany
« In my work, I deal with pictures that already exist and liberate them from their originally intended narration and function. »
Starting from the symbols of our society - an increasingly psychologically scrutinized communication through text and images - Peter Vahlefeld breaks up the context of such familiar obviousness with artistic means and incorporates it into his painting. Some motifs mutate into completely abstract color spaces, while other pictures still reveal objective details such as typography or figurative elements. In his overpaintings he thus stages a dialectical relationship between the visible and the hidden and thus a beautiful game of hiding and revealing. His examination is focused on the expressive gesture of the medium, the process of painting and the exhaustion of a formal and content-related motif. His painting is painting about painting.
Peter Vahlefeld has participated in many solo exhibitions in Germany as well as in annual art fairs such as Art Karlsruhe.
