About this artwork
A hazy light hangs over the surface. Above, a narrow strip of sky; below, a broad field of cracked earth in shades of green, ochre, and gold; below, a tranquil expanse of water in turquoise and aquamarine. The field supports the image—dense, weathered, introspective. Sky and water are rendered smoothly, almost toneless, giving the field space. At the lower edge, the turquoise meets the dry earth, coming to rest where they converge.
The painting… surface, made of marble dust and slaked lime, cracked into a network of lines as it dried; in places, flakes detached. The diluted glazes of acrylic, ink, and pigments seeped into the depressions, tracing the cracks. I applied a few gold pigments where the light remains on the ground.
I wanted to capture the moment when shallow water meets dry shore: still, without haste — a salt marsh in flat light, weathered and serene at the same time.

Petra Maruschek is an abstract painter who works between Düsseldorf and Mallorca. Her work begins with a painting surface made of slaked lime and marble dust. As it dries, it cracks naturally—a process she initiates but does not control. Onto the cracked surface, she applies layer upon layer of highly diluted acrylic glazes, ink, and pigments, sometimes incorporating shellac, rust, or gold pigment. The glazes collect in the crevices, seep into the cracks, accentuate some textures, and conceal others.
Her painting is abstract. The island is not a subject, but a condition – light, silence, heat, the vastness of sky and sea.
Her development was self-taught, but not unguided: several years of instruction with Tomasz Piwarski, a master student of Rissa (Düsseldorf Art Academy).
Exhibitions include Copelouzos Family Art Museum, Athens; Museum of Sóller; Mallorca, Nit de l'Art in Palma, Ses Salines, Llucmajor., Mallorca.
