About this artwork
‘In the grip of isolation, the ballet dancer slowly unleashes her inner fire and remembers who she is. Her demons fade away as her grace and passion comes to life in brilliant glow. A shadow dancer in the spotlight.’
Painted during Covid 19, this dancing scene covered the impact the pandemic had on people's working lives and mental health. I wanted to create a piece that conveyed a hopeful message about once more finding a sense of place and identity… in this uncertain time.
I wanted to portray the ballerina’s journey as she finds her sense of creative purpose following battles with depression. Set within a darkly atmospheric setting, the hidden expression on her face and reserved nature of her dance conveys an initial shyness, but also hints at a slowly brewing confidence and determination returning, as if the spot light on her body is actually a glow of life radiating from inside. The quiet sweeps of movement and splatter echoes the message that she is finding her feet again.
