About this artwork
‘Out of darkness, a fire within her shines again, her creative spirit slowly lifted to the surface again. After a long retreat and hiatus she is slightly rusty and treads cautiously, but finds her feet slowly. Her movements evoke a shyness and reserve, but also determination. Having been here before she takes her time, remembering not to fall under her own pressure.’ This piece is supposed to be gently introspective of a struggle to find creativity… again following a point of jadedness. The deliberately subtle narrative of finding ones feed again lead me to a slight change in style to reflect this. The rather muted colours, and looser and freer brushstrokes evoke a sense of slow burning in the mindset and body language of the dancer. I wanted to depict her struggle and determination to find her creativity and purpose in a softer and more tasteful way, using fewer hints of the dynamic splatter as metaphors for an echo of gradual hope and slowly finding renewed passion.
« I express the truest version of myself as I was, am, and will be in my work. »
