About this artwork
Humanity is, as a Jane Austen novel puts it, full of "pride and prejudice." We see something and form a judgment about it in less than a minute, and this judgment forms our comprehensive opinion. But what if we first see, pause, and observe without forming an opinion at all? The world would probably be a better place. Let's take this image: our first glance is at the lion: driven by a lust for flesh and blood. An evil animal. Then we are overcome…
with pity for the shepherd who courageously stands before his sheep, supposedly to protect them. So we have an opinion: the evil lion and the poor shepherd and his sheep.
But... if we take a closer look, we see that the lion isn't attacking at all. He's simply standing on his hind legs to reach the bowl of water the shepherd is offering him to quench his thirst. It's food for thought and a plea.

Philipp Spalt, a self-taught painter, primarily uses oil paints on canvas and brings great attention to detail. His technique is inspired by the Tenebrists, remains true to the representational, and artfully implements client requests. His works create an atmospheric, almost dreamy atmosphere and reflect longings and a comforting melancholy.
