About this artwork
Some time ago, I read the book 'The Count of Monte Cristo.' The character "Haydee" represents the daughter of the Albanian commander Ali Pasha and is sold into slavery by one of his adversaries. The Count buys Haydee and protects her from further harm, which is why she eventually becomes his loyal companion. "Haydee" fascinated me; her suffering touched me, and her entire character became a symbol of self-alienation for me.
