About this artwork
I've always been drawn to the paradox of storms - how they're both terrifying and beautiful, chaotic yet somehow ordered by forces greater than ourselves. With this piece I was endeavouring to convey a sense of awe-inspiring power and tranquillity and wanted to capture what I felt: that we too can stand firm in our storms, that beauty often emerges from the wildest moments of our lives.
Philippa Storey, a Canadian-born painter based in Australia, works in watercolour, acrylic, and oil, enriched by formal training at the North Shore School of Art. Her technique combines contemporary expressionism and realism, rendering sweeping landscapes, seascapes, and cloudscapes with meticulous detail and a captivating play of light and shadow. Each piece radiates her profound awe for nature, inviting viewers into moments of peace, reflection, and wonder, offering solace amid life’s motion.
