About this artwork
This work is part of a series I created shortly after arriving in Rome in 2010, but I reworked it in 2026. It was a serialized silhouette of the Venus of Syracuse. While visiting churches, I noticed that many principles celebrated by postwar Western art, such as serialization and all-over painting, were actually well-known to artists of earlier times, and I wanted to offer my own personal interpretation. But the result wasn't convincing enough, and…
the work had to undergo a long period of development.
My intuition, my gestures, my body as both material and spiritual substance have become the subject of this painting. A dancing creature with its head in the stars and its feet casually planted on the ground. Touching a luscious material (here, Sennelier oil pastel), dancing while working—these are indeed some of the great pleasures of my craft.

Phoebe Lesch, an artist originally from Munich with a rich background in fine arts and applied linguistics, explores drawing, sculpture, and physical and vocal performance. Her techniques blend condensation and dissolution to question the human condition, creating works where the tangible is transformed into dreams. She seeks to reveal the power of the inner journey and to awaken in each of us the desire for liberation.
