About this artwork
A solitary figure emerges on the right of the composition, suspended before an undefined, layered, and partially erased space. The face, almost completely absorbed by the black, loses its individual features and becomes an anonymous presence, a condition rather than an identity. The figure thus seems to be confronting something that cannot be fully reached. It doesn't simply observe a space: it seems to confront what that space conceals. A reflection…
on the human condition: the desire to transcend what separates us from something—a memory, another person, the past, or an unknowable dimension—and the awareness that every crossing leaves a trace.

« If we assign a place to art by designating it a space in which it must act, then we run the risk of rendering it harmless. Art must be subversive. -Anselm Kiefer »
