"Looking Back" is part of the "Second Life" series, in which I breathe new life into old paintings through targeted interventions. In this work, I've added photorealistic eyes to a classic sunflower still life I found in an antique shop. The blossoms, once silent, now begin to see.
They look directly back: watchful, questioning, attentive.
Thus, a familiar motif becomes an encounter: between past and present. The image plays with both unease and… intimacy. Who is actually observing whom here?
Looking Back explores perception, memory, and presence. It combines classical aesthetic quality with surreal calculation—poetic, slightly disturbing, and full of quiet tension.
My work arises from a fascination with ambivalence. Trust-distrust, freedom-order, reason-emotion, closeness-isolation and much more, all at the same time. This perspective stems from 30 years of experience as an entrepreneur and creative mind in my trade fair construction company, where responsibility, economics, structure and creative design and thinking were inextricably linked. In my works I translated these tensions into images - decisively and openly to resonance. I paint lived ambivalences.
