About this artwork
The series of works presents portrait-like depictions that address the death of Jina Mahsa Amini. The Iranian woman was arrested in 2022 for an alleged violation of the state's hijab law, beaten, and likely fatally injured. The starting point is fragmented images of hair, women, and various hijab head coverings, which appear to be collaged together.
The "portraits" are depicted approximately life-size, so that they become a "counterpart" within… the drawing. The title of the work refers to Amini's first name, "Jina," which means "life." The series currently comprises 10 drawings.
Rebekka Brunke works in the media of drawing, painting, and stop-motion film. She has studied at renowned art schools in Germany and abroad and has exhibited internationally. Her technique is based on collage-like compositions, combining fragments from different visual contexts and transforming them into new visual worlds and contexts. Her approach follows both planning and chance – in an investigation that puts the truth content, contexts, and contexts of different image sources to the test. In contrast to the smooth surfaces of the digitally edited images and AI-generated representations, the works reveal cracks and voids.
