About this artwork
“Stop and Breathe” is inspired by Edvard Munch’s “Young Woman on the Beach” created in 1896. I chose to use this piece as inspiration for this open call because I wanted to focus on a piece that I always come back to, that continues year after year to influence my process. This piece has long been one of my all-time favorite art pieces as I see myself in the image, I am the young woman standing by the water, breathing it in, taking a moment to just…
be, finding strength in the solitude of the moment. Some may see solitude others may see someone taking a moment of peace. I see a combination of both and find comfort in that combination. “Stop and Breathe” was painted to illustrate that connection, the symbols painted on the figure are the Norse Rune for Water.

Rika Maja Duevel is a painter/mixed media artist from Stavanger, Norway living in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
