The portrait is based on one of the most iconic moments in film when, in THE THIRD MAN (1949), previously-thought-dead Harry Lime (Welles) is revealed in a shaft of light to his old friend, Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten).
That image has outgrown THE THIRD MAN and has, I believe, come to represent Mr Welles at the height of his powers: by 1949, he'd made CITIZEN KANE and THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS, been a theatrical sensation on Broadway,… and terrified America with a radio play that made people believe they were being invaded by Martians.
The quote, from TOUCH OF EVIL (1958), to me sums up his life. No matter what happened in his later years - his increasing weight, making sherry commercials to pay the rent, and inability to get another film project off the ground, despite being universally acclaimed - he was "some kind of a man'." And no: it doesn't matter what you say about people.
