An incongruous black flow cascades down the mountainside into the heart of the desert. The seemingly pristine landscape actually conceals mining operations behind it. This flow is intended to be both an abyss opening onto the earth and a liquid that flows, its color and nature contrasting sharply with the surrounding environment. Here again, I aim to create an aesthetic shock of contrast in order to highlight, and thus astonish, to question the relationship… between humankind and its environment. The photograph was taken in the Atacama Desert, which is home to some of the largest open-pit mines on the planet. Alongside this, it is also a place of breathtaking natural beauty.
Photograph mounted on a wooden support, smalti (Venetian glass tesserae).
Romain Liverato, photographer and visual artist, draws his inspiration from the environment. Using landscape photography, which he modifies through various media such as painting, mosaic or collage, he brilliantly illustrates the human impact on nature. His work evokes the disconcerting emotion of this omnipresent alteration, implicating man as the measure - and cause - of all things.
