This work, made with a photograph and smalti (Venetian glass tesserae), is part of the series called Sanctified, in which I transpose the symbolic codes of Byzantine art to fragments of Nature, elevating it to the rank of sacred subject. The nimbus, traditionally reserved for holy figures, is used here to reveal the dignity of the living. Each piece in the series is designed from an original photograph, enriched by the application of smalti (Venetian… enamels) with metallic foil, elements derived from the tradition of Byzantine icons.
Here, the sacred subject is a Morpho butterfly, the largest in the world, seen in profile, and in black and white, to symbolize the fact that it has passed from life to death. But it carries in its halo the cross traditionally assigned to Christ who has the power of resurrection. Thus, this subject has passed into the underworld, it is preparing to be resurrected, a sign of the resilience of Nature.
Romain Liverato, photographer and visual artist, draws his inspiration from the environment. Using landscape photography, which he modifies through various media such as painting, mosaic or collage, he brilliantly illustrates the human impact on nature. His work evokes the disconcerting emotion of this omnipresent alteration, implicating man as the measure - and cause - of all things.
