I was inspired not only by Italian religious art of the 14th century in its depiction of haloed saints and the Ravennate Byzantine mosaic (mausoleum of Galla Placidia). Always faithful to my questioning about our relationship with nature, I asked myself why we would be content to praise men and women for their good deeds, when Nature, on which we are highly interdependent, is the condition of our life and of our survival. Based on this observation,… I decided to halo, to sanctify plant life. I chose this modest flower growing in meadows and gardens. In order to convey the grandeur of this little plant, I photographed it close-up. Through the use of mosaic made from Venetian glass tesserae in which inscribed 24-carat gold leaf is inserted, a very old medium in the history of art, I wish to include this subject in this long history of art.
Romain Liverato, photographer and visual artist, draws his inspiration from the environment. Using landscape photography, which he modifies through various media such as painting, mosaic or collage, he brilliantly illustrates the human impact on nature. His work evokes the disconcerting emotion of this omnipresent alteration, implicating man as the measure - and cause - of all things.
