Through this work, I wanted to approach that singular strength that arises from embraced vulnerability. What interests me here is not simply the figure of an elderly woman, but the intelligence of her face, the density of her lived experience, the ambivalence of her gesture. The hand placed before her eye does not conceal: it transforms the gaze, it creates distance, it makes it an enigma. It introduces into the portrait a subtle tension between… withdrawal and assertion, between protection and exposure. Ink allows me to work with this uncompromising truth, to seek out the essence of time in the details, the roughness, the micro-reliefs of the skin. In this work, I seek a presence that never fully reveals itself, a humanity that resists simple interpretation, and that affirms, in its very restraint, a sovereign dignity.
Serge Dumez, a painter and draftsman, began his artistic career with pencil drawing and pastel. His technique fuses the elegance of drawing and the vivacity of pastel, manifesting a predilection for deconstructed representations through cubism. By exploring human relationships in his works, Dumez conveys deep feelings and complex ideas.
