About this artwork
This painting, Hinterland, emerged from a place of both wonder and disorientation. I wanted to evoke a sense of drifting into untamed terrain—somewhere between landscape and memory, where form dissolves and the atmosphere thickens. There’s a pull between stillness and motion: forested silhouettes blur into painterly smears, while slashes of lavender and hot pink cut through like psychic markers or trails left by something passing through.
The layering… was instinctive—built up and broken down. I scraped, glazed, and overpainted, trying to find that moment where the image felt like it was breathing on its own. The landscape here isn’t literal; it’s emotional. It’s a hinterland not on any map, but one you wander when you’ve strayed too far from certainty and start to trust something quieter, more primal.
