About this artwork
This piece is one of the latest works in my Knight’s series, depicting a solitary knight charging toward an unseen opponent—a scene reminiscent of Don Quixote tilting at windmills. I was drawn to the parody of conflict and the absurdity of laying claim to something that was never yours to begin with.
At the base of the composition, I introduced waves to evoke the maritime journeys of the South American conquest—a nod to the search for new land,… a recurring theme in my work. Above, I added the outline of a dog effigy inspired by pre-Columbian art. Together, these elements stage a collision of cultures, where one attempts to impose itself upon another.
The title, Sundog, refers to the atmospheric phenomenon in which coloured spots of light appear due to the refraction of sunlight through ice crystals. I was inspired to use this title after witnessing the phenomenon firsthand during a visit to see my family on the Cornwall coast in the UK—a moment that has stayed with me.

Simon Boyd is a British painter based in La Pampa, Argentina. His paintings explore landscape as a space of memory, transformation and imagination.
