About this artwork
The work is a figurative painting characterized by a high degree of abstraction and deformation. At the center of the vertically oriented composition are two human figures, arranged in close spatial relation to one another.
Composition: The larger, upper figure is depicted in profile, facing right. Directly below it is a smaller figure, also facing right. The figures' bodies blend almost seamlessly into one another, with the upper figure defined… by a solid red area and the lower one by a yellow area.
Paint application: The paint application is gestural and impasto. Clearly visible brushstrokes and streaks of paint reveal the painting process. In some areas, especially in the background, the paint appears translucent, while in the central motifs it is applied opaquely and in layers.

Simon Thon studied at the Ruhr Academy of Fine Arts and subsequently worked in advertising before becoming a freelance photographer. His photographic work also maintains a clear artistic expression. Nevertheless, painting remains his true focus. In his studio, his work evolved from early figurative, realistic motifs to increasingly freer abstraction. He rejects the constraints of a single style and understands art as an open process. His painting thus becomes an intimate form of communication and, at the same time, an instrument for understanding the world and its current tensions. Social contradictions, frictions, and shifts act as underlying forces in his paintings, lending them both emotional and intellectual urgency.
