About this artwork
Palette d'Atelier immerses the gaze in the intimacy of a creative space. At the center of the composition, the artist constructs a silent scene where the canvases rest, stacked or placed against the walls, in an arrangement that is both random and controlled. Blues dominate, in a rich variation of cool tones, punctuated by beiges, grayish greens, and warmer touches.
The material, worked with a knife, gives the forms an almost sculptural presence.… We move through this pictorial architecture as if in a memory: the volumes, the shadows, the angles seem to retain the trace of the painter's gesture, of his passage.
The blue square on the floor, deliberately isolated, acts as a pure note or visual signature, anchoring the gaze and emphasizing the calm tension of the whole. Palette d'Atelier is a work about the place of making, about the state of waiting, silence, and concentration that is the studio.
« To sublimate, to appropriate the subject, to keep only the essential. »
Sophie Dumont is a contemporary French painter born in Paris in 1964. She currently lives and works in Normandy. Her work, primarily oil on canvas, explores the memory of places through abstract landscapes, stylized libraries, and studio interiors. Through the layering of numerous paints and subtle collages, she constructs structured compositions where matter, light, and color interact. Her work is distinguished by a balance between architecture and pictorial sensibility. Exhibiting for over twenty years in France and internationally, notably in Germany, Canada, Belgium, and Italy, Sophie Dumont's work is now featured in numerous private and museum collections.
