About this artwork
With Beethoven, I am not trying to create a faithful historical portrait, but to convey the inner power of a man whose music revolutionized history. Through thick impasto applied with a palette knife, I construct a face marked by tension, determination, and emotional intensity.
The impasto sculpts light as much as volume, while a palette dominated by blacks, grays, ochres, and whites reinforces the dramatic presence of the character. My intention… is to convey the creative energy and strength of character that seem to inhabit this composer.
This work is part of my series The Musicians, a collection of expressionist portraits dedicated to the great figures of classical music, where I prioritize psychological expression over simple resemblance.

Steeve Grangier is a self-taught Swiss painter and sculptor who has been painting outside of academic circles since 1983. His practice explores oil painting, impasto applied with a palette knife, and the integration of raw organic elements—such as the vine roots incorporated into the Noctis Corpus series.
His technique is characterized by a raw and figurative neo-expressionism, where the expressive distortion of the body and face, as well as spontaneous gestures, convey the instability of being. He seeks to capture the energy and constant mutation of identity, transmitting an intense inner tension through each canvas.
Member represented by the Circle Foundation for the Arts, which awarded him the Creative Excellence Prize (2026) for The Bottle Man. Candidate for the Arte Laguna Prize 2026 (Arsenale Nord, Venice).
