About this artwork
Birds that specialize in nocturnal hunting have certain characteristics that distinguish owls from other birds. The body is compact and the head is noticeably large and rounded. The owl's beak is strongly curved and sharp-edged.
Owls have large, forward-facing eyes that enable them to see their prey in three dimensions and to estimate speeds and distances. The eyes themselves are immobile, instead the animals can turn their head up to 270 °, which… greatly expands the field of vision. Many owls also have a visually striking face veil that directs sound towards their ears. The owl shown glides silently through the night and can surprise its prey.
