About this artwork
Like most of my circular artworks, this radially iterated manipulation of a photograph of a red dahlia aims to sustain a simple, meditative vibration. Other than the circular iteration, this portrays the brilliant red palette just as it was captured. The source flower, grown in my garden this year, was about the size of my hand. Stephen Calhoun, a self-taught visual artist, utilizes digital photography, digital manipulation, and assemblage in his iterative work. His photographic subjects are built by hand using boxes, found objects and painted materials. Next he uses the pattern-making power of iteration to bring a compelling order to the chaotic subject.
