About this artwork
This painting is a visceral meditation on myth, memory, and ecological collapse. Drawing from the legend that coral was born from Medusa’s blood—spilled beside the Red Sea after Perseus laid down her severed head—it evokes the haunting beauty of transformation through trauma. With over half of the world’s coral now bleached and dying, the image questions whether the death of coral is merely a symptom of rising temperatures or a deeper metaphor for… societal unraveling. Joseph Campbell’s interpretation of Medusa as a symbol of collective shock and the end of civilizations resonates here, as the chaotic underwater scene becomes a mirror to our own sociological trauma. In a time when Campbell insisted the only myth worth telling is one about the planet, this work becomes both elegy and warning—a surreal requiem for the reefs and a call to confront the myth we are living.
Stephen Linsteadt expresses transformative themes on canvas through oil. His approach involves intentional brushstrokes, mindful of color, pattern and surprises in creation. His works act as bridges, balancing between conscious and unconscious realms, reflecting a deeply spiritual, introspective dialogue.
