About this artwork
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,
it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness,
it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair,
we had everything before us, we had nothing before us,
we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way.
I explored the duality in Korea's history. It has been defined by contrasts: that decades of colonial subjugation.
Painful path to independence, catalyzed… by the devastation of Japan after the atomic bombings, Little Boy and Fat Man, marks a pivotal moment of both liberation and tragedy. In this juxtaposition, the story of Korea mirrors the biblical promise of light emerging from darkness—a new beginning that arose from the rubble of war, oppression, and sacrifice.
It is a story of survival and rebirth, where tragedy gives birth to the possibility of a new and brighter future.

Su Hyun Kim is a South Korean painter who has exhibited nationally, as well as in China and the United States. She became an artist in order to help the world by ‘revealing mystic truths’. Kim’s paintings combine photography and illusion in unique ways, oscillating between abstraction and realism. Her compositions are witness to personal stories, portraying individuals as universal archetypes that are simultaneously simple and complex, as we all are. She creates using oils and watercolors on canvas.
