About this artwork
In Venice, the train station with its grand green dome was the scene of Marco and Lucia's whimsical romance. Marco, a passionate gondolier, adored Lucia, an artist who sketched at the station. One day, Marco decided to surprise Lucia with a grand gesture. As she sketched, he called out, "Lucia, my love, a surprise!" Standing in his gondola, he held a bouquet and a model of the station he'd made. But in his excitement, he fell into the canal with… a splash, flowers and model flying. Lucia, startled, looked up to see Marco emerge, drenched but determined. The crowd laughed, but Lucia giggled, charmed by his earnestness. She helped him out, and he handed her the soggy bouquet and model, declaring, "For you, my love, even if I must dive into Venice's depths." Touched, Lucia kissed him amidst the laughter. Their love story became legendary, with Lucia's paintings of the event becoming popular. Under the station's dome, their romance thrived, proving true love often come from a mishap.
« Through my art, I find sanity, joy, and calmness. If my art can bring joy and happiness to any person, I see it as mission accomplished. »
Suzette Datema, a painter who resides in the United Kingdom, became an artist because of the feeling of excitement that color gives her, as well as the beauty of art and creation. She translates her naive style through compositions that are seaside themed and also paints portraits of women. Datema often covers the canvas with black paint before beginning a piece, as a white surface ‘can seem daunting’. She works using both oils and acrylics.
