About this artwork
Winter is a fascinating time as an artist. When you are a child, you look at the snow and all you see is pristine white. As an artist, you look at the landscape and you see muted purples, blues and greys. To bring drama to a landscape, you consider putting your composition on different color underpaintings but for me; I use a different color suede matboard. This piece was done on a deep burgundy that helps keep the cool landscape feel rich instead… of sterile. I had moved from the base of the Selkirks in North Idaho to the rolling hills of Spokane. While I loved the skies over the Palouse, the deep snow that surrounded you in North Idaho is romantic to paint. Cat tails are a part of the Native American food sources in the area and the way they change in the landscape just calls to be captured. Stroking the suede surface with the soft pastel, gently renders the texture and reflection of the blues from the sky.
T Kurtz, a painter with a deep-rooted background in representational art and formal training in fine arts, works primarily with soft pastels. Her technique balances a mesmerizing interplay between photorealism and gentle impressionism, using soft strokes to capture the essence of light and shadow over detailed features. Her luminous landscapes distill moments of pure beauty, inviting viewers to experience a profound sense of peace and calm that transcends everyday concerns.
