About this artwork
I created this lovely rendition of a Milkweed Seedpod from reference material provided by Karen Smith. Milkweed serves as the food source for the caterpillar that pupates into impressive Monarch Butterfly. A beautiful flower, the sculptural structure of the seedpod has always fascinated me. When the pods begin to ripen, the fibers dry and pull the pod husks apart. The seeds begin to reach out on the inner fibers that spread as they dry, creating… fronds that catch the wind and carry the dark seeds out to propagate more flowers. The textured fronds always reminded me of the skirts dancers wear as they float across a stage. As a young girl, I would try to catch this airy dancers floating through the air. I would cup it in gingerly my hand and whisper a wish for it to carry on the wind when I opened my fingers to release it. These "dancers" are waiting for their cue to enter the stage and float on the wind.
T Kurtz, a painter with a deep-rooted background in representational art and formal training in fine arts, works primarily with soft pastels. Her technique balances a mesmerizing interplay between photorealism and gentle impressionism, using soft strokes to capture the essence of light and shadow over detailed features. Her luminous landscapes distill moments of pure beauty, inviting viewers to experience a profound sense of peace and calm that transcends everyday concerns.
