A detailed sanguine chalk drawing of Antonio Canova's "Hercules and Lichas". During the French occupation of Rome in 1789, they had discovered the sculpture in Canova's art studio, and saw the sculpture as a symbol of the French revolution (represented by Hercules) overthrowing the monarchy (represented by Lichas).
This work was done as an in-depth anatomical study as a way to strengthen my figure drawing skills. Many people believe that life drawing… is the best way to learn drawing the figure, but personally, I believe we learn much more by studying from the Masters who paved the way for us.
This work has been sold and added to a private collection in Brisbane, Australia.
Thomas Glenn, trained in Fine Art and classical oil painting, has excelled in teaching academic drawing. Using the techniques of Academic Realism, similar to artists like Jean Leon Gerome, Glenn captures the complexity of form through mastering colour composition. Imbued with a fascination for ancient history, his work echoes the inevitable cycle of societal downfall, eliciting reflections upon the transience of empires.
