This work was completed as an architectural study of the ancient Corinthian column, during my years studying traditional drafting.
As part of their training, the 19th C. Architects of the Beaux Arts academy spent many hours laboriously researching and detailing every aspect of the design of these beautiful Greek columns.
The entire drawing was done in ink, and the shadows were drawn and casted using geometry as a way of calculating where the shadows… would fall across the form.
As well as researching the design and the dimensions of the column, I had to study the art of sciagraphy extensively in order to complete this piece, and I consider this artwork as my tribute to the brilliants minds of the Beaux Arts Academy.
Thomas Glenn, trained in Fine Art and classical oil painting, has excelled in teaching academic drawing. Using the techniques of Academic Realism, similar to artists like Jean Leon Gerome, Glenn captures the complexity of form through mastering colour composition. Imbued with a fascination for ancient history, his work echoes the inevitable cycle of societal downfall, eliciting reflections upon the transience of empires.
