Shiprock – called ‘Tsé Bitʼaʼí’ in Navajo, meaning ‘rock with wings’ or ‘rock wing’ – is a sacred place for the Navajo people with deep mythical significance and towers over the plain like a gigantic fortress.
According to legend, Shiprock was once a giant bird that carried the ancestors of the Navajo people to safety. The Navajo say that they came from far to the north and travelled on the back of this bird until… they reached their present-day homeland. After the bird had fulfilled its task, it turned to stone and became the rock we see today.
