About this artwork
Khardung la Pass in India is a Himalayan mountain Pass, on the Ladakh Range, north of Leh and forms the gateway to Nubra Valley. It is situated at an elevation of about 17500 feet above sea level and is one of the world’s highest motorable roads. We were on a road trip a couple of years ago and stopping at Khardung la Pass was a fascinating experience. On account of the high altitude and consequent low oxygen, I was out of the car only for about… fifteen minutes or so, even though it was a lovely, sunny day. Apart from absorbing the beauty of the magnificent mountains all around, I managed to take a few photographs to be used as reference for paintings later on.
The snow had formed beautiful patterns on the mountain and I have tried to capture the fleeting light and texture, creating a sense of movement. This piece breathes the wild, untamed spirit of nature and brings a refreshing, invigorating raw energy of the Himalayas, that transforms any space into a sanctuary of beauty.
