About this artwork
This small picture on canvas also comes from a series of preparatory works for the painting Abendrot II and was created in the same year. It is painted exclusively in red tones. The areas in cadmium orange in the center of the image shine most brightly.
The dark tones consist largely of madder glazes placed one on top of the other.
The painting does not depict any specific object. The blur and cloudy character of the depiction is reminiscent of… the intensely warm atmosphere of a sunset. It could represent a detail, a section of the evening sky on a hot summer day. Generally, people imagine the sky to be blue, or sometimes gray, especially on rainy days. But the sky with its clouds can reflect an incredible color, like in this picture, the red glow of the setting sun. The title Cloudy could be a clue.

The German artist Uwe Beyer, born in 1959, lives in Coswig, near Dresden, and in Düsseldorf. He studied at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle (1988–1993). Uwe Beyer's paintings emerge more from mindfulness than from control. The material is allowed to move, resist, and settle. Form is not imposed but develops organically—stabilizing briefly before dissolving back into openness. Each work exists in a tension between presence and withdrawal, density and emptiness. It exists as a self-contained object while simultaneously eluding complete visibility. Instead of composing images, his practice creates the conditions for their emergence. These paintings do not represent the world.
They reveal the conditions under which form – and thus reality – comes into being. What remains is not an image, but a trace of becoming.
