About this artwork
Achernar, or Alpha Eridani, is the brightest star in the constellation Eridanus. This constellation is visible only from the southern hemisphere; particularly from the balcony of my studio, where I dedicate my evenings to stargazing. When daylight fades and no longer allows me to paint, the sky becomes my canvas.
This work thus engages in a dialogue between the visible and the invisible, between the radiance of day and the depths of night. Despite… the dark ultramarine glaze applied to the gilded metallic leaf, the light from the latter persists, piercing the material and revealing, even in the darkness, an inner brilliance.
It is this fragile balance between shadow and light, between the end of one gesture and the birth of another, that gives Achernar - 246,942 Hz its particular brilliance; that of a star that continues to shine, even when everything seems to have fallen silent.
Victor Abel, a Canadian artist living in Réunion Island, explores the relationship between material, gesture, and light. His work, rooted in research on colors, shapes, and contrasts, is characterized in particular by the use of metal supports and gold leaf gilding. Through his works, he questions the viewer's perception, playing on the effects of depth and movement.
Trained in both traditional techniques and contemporary approaches, he makes his own paints from natural pigments and experiments with processes to bring to life compositions where abstraction dialogues with symbols.
Alongside his creative work, he designs site-specific performances and installations, placing his art in atypical spaces. He also invests in the transmission of knowledge by offering training courses and workshops aimed at different audiences, from young creators to established artists.
