About this artwork
I wanted to pay homage to one of the most beautiful passages in French literature, chapter 16 of Night Flight by Antoine de Saint Exupéry. It is a poignant text. In the skies of South America at the beginning of the 20th century, when weather forecasts were not as sophisticated as they are today, an airplane pilot and his radio operator are caught in a storm. They manage to escape by flying above the meteor. Two things become clear to them. The first…
is that they will not have enough fuel to fly above the storm before it dissipates. The second is that the plane is too fragile to attempt to return to the storm. And yet, the spectacle before them is the most beautiful aesthetic experience of their entire lives, which will soon end. The moon shimmers above the clouds. The sky is bathed in light coming from everywhere. They feel infinitely enriched by such an experience and at the same time doomed.

Victor Abel, a Canadian artist living in Réunion Island, explores the relationship between material, gesture, and light. His work, rooted in research on colors, shapes, and contrasts, is characterized in particular by the use of metal supports and gold leaf gilding. Through his works, he questions the viewer's perception, playing on the effects of depth and movement.
Trained in both traditional techniques and contemporary approaches, he makes his own paints from natural pigments and experiments with processes to bring to life compositions where abstraction dialogues with symbols.
Alongside his creative work, he designs site-specific performances and installations, placing his art in atypical spaces. He also invests in the transmission of knowledge by offering training courses and workshops aimed at different audiences, from young creators to established artists.
