About this artwork
In my painting, Sunset Sentinel, I captured the quiet dignity of a Blue heron standing watch as day fades into night. I used a heavy impasto technique, layering thick, rhythmic strokes of paint to give the marsh grass and the bird’s plumage a tactile, three-dimensional energy.
The scenery is a study in contrast: the sky is rendered with sweeping, blended strokes of gold and violet, while the foreground is a dense thicket of rugged, palette-knife… textures. I wanted the viewer to feel the physical weight of the wetlands and the fleeting, glowing warmth of the horizon as it reflects in the still water.
