Cortennote 1 steel, also called weathering steel, self-protecting steel, or weathering steel in Quebec, is a steel with induced surface corrosion. It is used in architecture, landscaping, construction and outdoor sculpture, for its appearance and its resistance to atmospheric conditions. The oxidation of Corten steel occurs naturally in six months and then stabilizes over time, but some professionals… use rust accelerator to rust the surface in less than an hour. When Corten steel is intended for interior use, it is nevertheless possible to stop the oxidation at a chosen stage by applying a protective varnish (such as Rustol) to preserve the state reached and add a certain degree of shine.
