This photograph, titled “The Gateway to Nature and Time”, was taken in Nervi Park, Genoa, Italy. I printed it in the darkroom on Ilford Saint paper. The unique texture and wash of the Saint paper inspired me to isolate the original shape of the tree roots and rearrange them into a gateway, opening a dialogue between nature and time. I favour negative space, as it offers room for the imagination. In this piece, I have used negative space to open a… door, yet we will never know what lies beyond it.
Yan Wang blends photography, darkroom processes, and traditional Chinese painting, drawing from his early training in Chinese art and international studies. He innovatively merges Eastern aesthetics and Western techniques, using brushwork to deconstruct and transform photographic images, often employing black-and-white darkroom methods and exploring various media like glass and canvas. His painterly, surreal, and poetic works evoke a sense of nostalgia, reverence, and longing, serving as a tribute to his teacher and synthesizing worlds, memories, and cultural emotion.
