About this artwork
This work by Yoann Borsato clearly evokes the legacy of Edward Hopper through its focus on ordinary scenes and the feeling of suspended time, where the figures seem simultaneously united and inwardly isolated. The composition highlights a commonplace situation without explicit narration, leaving the interpretation of relationships and silences to the viewer.
However, he situates this lineage within a decidedly contemporary context. New York, and… more specifically the Lower East Side, is depicted as a dense and vibrant space, saturated with urban signs, colors, and textures, far removed from Hopper's minimalist settings. Light does not separate the figures, but connects them, and the diversity of bodies and attitudes reflects contemporary urban sociability.
The work thus lies at the crossroads of two eras: it takes up Hopper's melancholy and restraint while transforming them into a collective scene, anchored in the energy and complexity of the 21st century.
« My work is marked by my exchanges, travels, and my daily life in the Parisian suburbs, restoring contemporary and imaginary landscapes, borrowed from nostalgia. »
