A curation by Natalie Slater, Curator at Singulart - A solo curation of works from David San Francisco’s “The Emptied Image” and “Place Your Ad Here” series.
David San Francisco’s paintings sit between construction and erasure. Built through layered grey grounds, graphic interruptions, loose gestural marks, and measured blocks of saturated color, the works feel simultaneously unfinished and exact.
Across “The Emptied Image” and “Place Your Ad Here,” different visual languages collide across the surface — fragments of drawing, architecture, interface, and abstraction layered into compositions that feel both industrial and unstable. Certain passages appear highly controlled, while others feel partially interrupted or scraped back altogether. Nothing fully settles, yet everything holds together.
The paintings carry the rhythm of contemporary visual culture without directly illustrating it. Advertising space, digital systems, public surfaces, edited information — it’s all present in the background language of the work, but slowed down and stripped back.
The image stays in a constant state of revision — interrupted, updated, and never entirely fixed.
