A curation by Flavio Scaloni, Gallery Manager at Galerie Lo Scalo - I present a chillingly beautiful selection of works centered on the theme of Ice. Ice captivates artists as a powerful symbol of ephemerality, purity, stillness, and immense, slow-moving power. Psychologically, it can represent emotional frigidity or a suspended state of time and feeling. Symbolically, ice and icebergs are now overwhelmingly associated with the climate crisis, fragility, and environmental change.
The theme has been profoundly explored in contemporary art from 1950 onward. The conceptual artist Olafur Eliasson has famously used actual ice in his installations, notably Ice Watch (2014), where glacial ice blocks were transported and displayed in public spaces to force a visceral confrontation with melting. Painter Gerhard Richter has also addressed this theme, capturing vast, icy, abstract landscapes that evoke a sense of the sublime and the inhuman scale of nature. For a world-famous photographer, Sebastião Salgado extensively documented polar regions, offering powerful, monochrome visual testaments to the remote majesty of ice in his work, especially in his series Genesis. Our emerging artists continue this dialogue, interpreting the crystallized water as either a structural marvel, a spiritual void, or an urgent environmental commentary.
