About this artwork
I have been a fan of bulls since my earliest childhood. I have attended bullfighting shows of all types and conditions, I have traveled throughout the bullfighting universe and I have come to have a magnificent library of the genre.
Today, as a painter, I continue to consider it as an important element of culture and civilization, protected by all the arts. Bulls and bullfighters, generally in my impressionist-expressionist line, make up part of… my work. On this occasion, my painting is inspired by the Spanish matador Luis Miguel Dominguín, in his early days.
In general, impressionism continues to be the style that best matches bullfighting painting. The color converted into light, the line as an insinuation of a geometry, are the most appropriate language for a universe divided into sun and shadow, configured by life and death, where blood is transmuted into jewel and man assumes illumination and is dressed in lights...
Ángel Alcalde's artistic career began in Madrid in the late 1970s, in the workshops of hand-painted film posters, where he shared a creative space with Antonio López, a decisive experience in shaping his artistic vision. Later, his interests expanded to include journalism, and in the 1990s, he joined the University of Castilla-La Mancha as Chief of Staff to the Rector, contributing to its institutional development. In 2010, he definitively returned to painting with a mature style, where Impressionism and Expressionism converge through a bold use of color, light, and texture.
