About this artwork
There’s a moment just after sunset when the city transforms—when neon signs flicker to life and the sky glows orange, hinting at stories unfolding in the shadows. “City Light” captures that fleeting magic: the pulse of urban life, the nostalgia of neon, and the quiet beauty found in unexpected places.
During my years in Seattle I had often driven the I-5 north/south expressway to downtown Seattle fascinated by this sign; which had the same large… signage facing both east and west. Just south of Downtown was a large facility for the City Light Company which was the electric utility service. The signs were gigantic; large enough to be easily read by nearby traffic moving at high speeds.
The sign was originally installed atop a warehouse in 1926. The building was located at the existing location of the South Service Center, which is home to the last remaining original City Light sign. In 2016 the utility replaced the signs' neon lights.
Arthur Marcus is a photographer and architect whose work draws deeply from decades of architectural practice and immersive urban photography. He utilizes abstract framing, modernist influences, and masterful play of light and shadow to distill architecture and cityscapes into poetic, contemplative compositions. His photography technique emphasizes fragmenting the built environment, revealing hidden rhythms and a quiet, kinetic energy in everyday moments. Through his lens, Marcus conveys nostalgia, reflection and the complexity of modern urban life—inviting viewers to pause and discover the transformative beauty in ordinary scenes.
