About this artwork
The lake had been still all morning as I walked the shore, a slight ripple, not a gull’s cry—just the slow churn of clouds gathering. The wind hadn’t arrived yet, but the trees knew as I could see it in the way the spruce leaned ever so slightly inland. On the rocky shore, moss clung to cracks and the grass bent low. A single wave slapped the northern rock as a warning. The air was heavy with the scent of spruce and cedar, and somewhere out on the… horizon, the islands blurred into shadow. This was the moment that the lake held its breath, and everything went silent. The storm hadn’t broken yet, but it was close. You could feel it in your teeth. The kind of storm that rearranges shorelines but for now, the lake waited. This was the inspiration for this painting
Clyde Smith, a self-taught painter of First Nations heritage from Northern Ontario, primarily uses acrylic on canvas and watercolor paper, drawing inspiration from the landscapes and cultural textures of his background. His technique weaves watercolor effects with both fluid washes and bold, layered brushwork, spanning portraits, landscapes, still life, and surrealism. His profound reverence for memory and place infuses his art with quiet drama, inviting viewers to feel the emotional resonance of the northern wilderness and the enduring stories rooted within it.
