About this artwork
In The Dance, three white mice step into the spotlight. Hand in hand, they move gracefully across the stage, each with their own personality—one with a delicate bow, the other with a shiny collar. Their bodies sway in unison, while their long pink tails, like playful lines, enhance the movement.
The bright yellow of the spotlights contrasts sharply with the dark background, from which a flock of black mice with glowing eyes watches the action. This… creates a tension between lightness and menace, between the safe glow of the stage and the lurking shadows of the audience.
The work speaks of community, expressiveness, and the fragility of the moment in the spotlight. It invites us to experience the ambivalence of joy and danger, of play and seriousness—and the poetic power of a dance that means far more than mere movement.
Friederike Toeppe, a visual artist, draws, paints, and creates textile art. Her technique varies between detailed, figurative oil painting and handcrafted textile sculptures, playing with the tension between realism and symbolism. Her themes include the web of relationships between humans and animals, nature, vulnerability, and power. Her works stimulate reflection and invite us to consider our relationship with nature and society.
