About this artwork
"Ice Chamber" opens the view into an imaginary space of light and silence – as if one were standing at the entrance to a mysterious cave of crystalline frozen water. The finely branched structures in the center are reminiscent of frozen lakes or the delicate network of ice crystals on glass.
Dark areas along the edges frame the cool expanse and enhance the work's sense of depth. The pigments, resins, and oils used react to the cold in a way that… remains unpredictable—the result is a sensual interplay of control and surrender to the natural process.

Herwig Port is one of the most versatile painters who makes full use of his craftsmanship. As a young child, he spent a lot of time in his grandfather's studio and was taught oil painting techniques. This enabled him to develop a broad spectrum of painterly expressiveness. Herwig Port creates luminous oil paintings characterized by harmonious coloration. His technique is based on thin, translucent layers of paint that allow the white of the canvas to shine through and their luminosity is reminiscent of church windows. His themes are the beauty of transience, expressed through autumnally colored vine leaves and the play of light in mountain and lake landscapes, which he often depicts in a highly abstract or almost photorealistic manner. In his work, it is important to him to always maintain a childlike curiosity in order to remain creative. This creativity lends his works their special expressiveness.
