About this artwork
Starting from a portrait of a friend, I start to paint a head. First I sketch the portrait. Then I begin to build the head by rhythmically placing the color. The portrait dissolves and the head emerges again and again and then dissolves more and more into its structure. The image is an allusion to the constant change of our being up to the dissolution of matter and the stability of our soul, the essence of our being - our imprint that remains.
… I was inspired to paint my heads or portraits in this way by my live performance "Transformation through the Word - Homage to Christoph Schlingensief", in which I dissolve the head completely into white at the end. While painting, this constantly transforms until it completely dissolves - the dissolved matter. A light trace of the head remains - the essence.
« Art touches our soul and tries to grasp the truth. »
Ilona Ottenbreit is a German painter, sculptor and draftsman who has exhibited extensively in both solo and group events in Germany and the United Kingdom. Her works examine rhythm and movement, as it is the 'cause of our lives'. Ottenbreit's sculptures portray groups of people in movement, representing a collective connection, or oneness. She begins her process by sketching and examining motion, following the dancer with lines and recording what she can intuitively grasp.
